Mon, 11/30/2009 - 1:13pm

SUPERIOR - Health officials have confirmed Douglas County's first death related to the H1N1 "swine flu."

The health department says the victim is an adult between 24 and 64 years old *with underlying health problems.  Experts use this a reminder to get the vaccine as soon as you can.

"If you have the opportunity to prevent or to minimize this disease by taking the vaccine, that's probably the best way to manage it," said Deb Clasen with Douglas County Health and Human Services.

Minnesota health officials have also confirmed two H1N1-related deaths in St. Louis County, and two in Itasca County.  There is also a suspected death in Bayfield County.

The priority groups for H1N1 vaccine to include people:

  • Age 6 months through 24 years.
  • Age 25 years through 64 years with a chronic medical condition that puts them at higher risk of medical complications from influenza.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Health care providers or emergency medical services personnel.
  • Living with or caring for children under 6 months of age.

Douglas County has a number of H1N1 flu clinics for targeted members of public, beginning Tuesday:

DECEMBER 2ND: Superior High School, Superior Middle School

DECEMBER 3RD: Bryant Elementary, Maranatha Academy, Four Corners Elementary, Lake Superior Elementary

DECEMBER 4TH: Twin Ports Baptist, Northwestern Elementery, Northwestern Middle School, Northwestern High School, Solon Springs School District
