International Falls usually stakes its claim to the "Nation's Icebox" label in the dead of winter.
But in 2009, the city is making its nickname stick year–round.
Last month was the coldest July on record in International Falls, according to the National Weather Service.
The average temperature for the month was 58.8 degrees. That's 7.3 degrees below normal, and 0.6 degrees below the previous record, set in 1992.
The city failed to record a single 80–degree reading the entire month, and overnight lows fell into the 30s four times - including nights when temperatures fell to 35 degrees.
In Duluth, July was cool – but not record–setting. The average monthly temperature was 62.1 degrees - that's 0.1 degree off making the list of the top 10 coolest Julys on record in Duluth.
3.33 inches of rain fell in Duluth in July, which is 0.87 inches below normal.
In International Falls, 3.63 inches of rain fell for the month, which is 0.26 inches above normal.
